All classes will have a fee of $49 (forty-nine dollars) payable to CKCS. No membership in either CKCS or SeniorNet is required. There are no age requirements.

Descriptions of classes offered by CKCS are listed below. However, not all classes are being taught this term. We encourage you to look over these profiles and get your name on a list for future classes to be taught. When a subject has sufficient interest it will be included in the class schedule. You are also invited to suggest a class you are interested in not listed here. Call CKCS at 859-373-1000 for reservations.

Mac OS X (10) Leopard... This class will be an intermediate Mac OS X 10.5(Leopard) class.

We will teach the operating system called Leopard as well as Internet tips.

You'll learn all about files, folders, the Dock, TimeMachine, Quick Look, Spaces, and other features offered in Apple's newest operating system. We'll show you how to more effectively use your Mac and get you up to speed using the Finder, Home folder, menus, and drop-down menus. This class is for anyone interested in the Mac operating system. Students owning a Macintosh laptop are encouraged to bring it to class. In addition, we talk about the Web and other Internet programs available for your Mac.

Mac - AppleWorks 6 This is a Swiss army knife of programs. It's a word processor, spreadsheet,database, drawing, painting, and presentation (like PowerPoint) program.

We'll deal with the basics of this program and show users how easily AppleWorks lets you integrate one module into another.

For example, you can easily import a drawing you created into your word processing document and vice-versa.

You should know basic keyboarding skills and the basics of Mac OS X to sign up. Return to Class Schedule.

Mac Digital Photography... We will show you how to import, edit, and manipulate digital images on your Mac. iPhoto will be used to crop, resize and improve your pictures. Adobe Photoshop Elements 2 as well as Graphic Converter, two popular Mac digital imaging programs, will be reviewed and demonstrated. Prerequisites: The student should have an understanding of Mac OS X (Jaguar) basics to enroll in this class. Return to Class Schedule.

Computer Basics...Hands-on training. Introduction unveils much of the mystery and confusion about the computer and its terminology. The student will use the Calculator and Solitaire programs to become familiar with using the computer. The student progresses to word processing programs to set up, type, and print a letter. Exercises include how to edit and format data. Finally the student will learn to save a file and retrieve it, as well as organize files into folders. The last day of class is spent using the internet to access information on the worldwide web. Return to Class Schedule.

Beyond the Basics... Hands-on training. The class reinforces and expands the file management skills learned in Computer Basics. The student will learn about their Desktop, Taskbar and Start Menu and how to customize and change settings. They will learn about computer maintenance, how to add/remove programs, back up their files, as well as learn about computer security, troubleshooting and possible steps to solve their computer problems. Microsoft Word... Microsoft Word is one of the most popular word processing programs being used today. This class teaches the fundamentals of the program such as formatting, tabs, page set-up, mail merging and preparation for printing your documents. Return to Class Schedule.

MS Access... Access is a relational database program, which is used in many businesses today. It is used to manage and archive data. Most record keeping in businesses rely on this type of database. Start at the beginning to learn Access or attend to enhance your basic knowledge. Prerequisites: Computer Basics, Beyond the Basics or have a basic knowledge of computers. Return to Class Schedule.

Excel... Learn the basics of this popular spreadsheet software: Basic math calculations, cells, columns, and totals will be shown with hands-on experience where students will print reports using their own figures and formulas. Prerequisites: Computer Basics, Beyond the Basics or equivalent experience. Return to Class Schedule.

Beginning Digital Imaging... In this course you will learn how to acquire images with your camera or scanners (film and flatbed), get to know the software (Paint Shop Pro), learn to use basic enhancement techniques plus some important selection tools, get a basic understanding of pixels, and understand their function for print resolution and e-mail.

At the end of your 6 weeks you should be able to scan in slides and transfer you photos from your camera to the computer, do basic corrections on your photos or scans, print your images with the correct print resolution, and convert your images for e-mail use.

Advanced Digital Imaging... In this course you will work with layers, vector tools, various types of texts (floating, vector, on-a-path), use the various functions of the Materials palette (gradients, patterns and textures), clone from one image to another, learn to use the background eraser, move objects from one image to another, use feathered selections for making collages, and use simple masks.

At the end of your 6 weeks you should be able to clean up an image and remove flaws or distractions, make collages that combine objects from various images, enhance your photos with texts, masks, frames or borders, and understand the difference between background layer and raster and vector layers.

Supervised Image Enhancement... Bring your own photos, negatives or slides. Scan and enhance and/or combine them in collages. We are there to help you.

Prerequisite: Advanced Digital Imaging Return to Class Schedule.

Photoshop Elements... In this six week course we are primarily interested in editing and enhancing photos but we shall also spend some time on the Organizer where we shall import some photos, making them into "Collections" and/or give them "Tags." In addition we shall also explore some “Creations" such as making an Album Page or a short very Slide Show with music.But our main focus will stay with the Editor, where we shall enhance photos with both, "Quick Fix" and with "Full Edit" with its latest new tools. And last but not least, we shall learn about pixels and how important they are for printing and e-mailing photos with the correct resolution.

At the end of the 6 weeks you should be able to go back and forth between the Editor and the Organizer; you will be able to do basic enhancements to an image or to a selection within it; you will be able to clone, to use levels and color curves, apply text, and make your first adjustment layer using the levels tool. Family Tree Maker... Family Tree Maker is a program for organizing your family history. In this class you will enter family names, information, and photos. You will learn to print your family trees, genealogy reports, and scrapbooks. The course explores web sites where genealogy records are kept. You can save your genealogy information to a disk and take it home with you. Information on different versions of Family Tree Maker will be available. Prerequisites: Computer Basics, Beyond the Basics or equivalent experience. Return to Class Schedule.

Mac: Intermediate OS X... This course tackles file management, multiple users and maintenance. We'll examine several options for storing your files, how to set up your Mac so that more than one user can have his or her own customized settings, and basic OS X maintenance. You should know how to create folders, how to copy and paste text, and how to use basic Menu Bar commands such as File and Edit. Students will be using OS X (10.2 Jaguar), but instruction applies to other flavors of Mac OS X. Return to Class Schedule.

Mac: Internet Basics... We will cover three major areas of the Internet: E-mail, World Wide Web, Usenet Newsgroups.This course is an overview of everything from handling e-mail attachments and avoiding spam to how to search the Web and find postings on the newsgroups. Prerequisites: A basic knowledge of Mac operating system X (10) Jaguar. Return to Class Schedule.

Mac: Intermediate Internet... This course will cover the same ground as Internet Basics, but will be an intermediate Internet course. You know the basics...now we'll deal specifically with search engines, downloading software, pesky e-mail attachment problems, and blocking spam. Return to Class Schedule.

Database (MS Works)... Many computers purchased today include the integrated program, Microsoft Works or Microsoft Works Suite. Included in this software is a very good database program intended for home and small business use. This database can be used to track home and business inventories, address books with Mail Merge, recipes, book, CD or DVD collections and many other tasks to run your small business or home. Prerequisites: Computer Basics, Beyond Basics or MS Works or comparable intermediate computer skills. Return to Class Schedule.

Beginning Word Processing... An in depth basics course on word processing using MS Works Word Processor. We will also be exploring the templates and wizards included in MS Works by studying the Task Launcher. This course will be an abbreviated course in beginning word processing which will better prepare students who want to learn how to use MS Word in depth. The prerequisite for this course is Computer Basics. Return to Class Schedule.

Beginning Spreadsheet & Database... An expanded look at the basics of using a Spreadsheet and the MS Works Database. This course will better prepare students who want to follow up with MS Works Database course, Excel and even MS Access. The prerequisite for this course is Computer Basics, but many students will benefit from having completed Beginning Word Processing. Return to Class Schedule.

File Management... You will learn how to gather much basic and valuable information about your computer, how to make Shortcuts to programs and folders, how to customize your computer, how to create folders in which to save your documents, how to copy and move files and folders, how to back up your data. You will also learn how to install and remove programs, how to manage your e-mail and enhance how you use the Internet, how to safeguard your computer. Prerequisites: Computer Basics, Beyond the Basics or equivalent experience, and preferably one or two other courses so that you have created some files to manage. Return to Class Schedule.

Microsoft Publisher... Make professional-looking publications with Publisher's pre-designed layouts, or create your own custom look. You will learn the basics of desktop publishing as well as some of the higher-level functions that Microsoft Publisher makes possible. Return to Class Schedule.

Word Perfect... Some of you may have new computers and are finding that instead of Word you have Word Perfect. Though less well-known, Word Perfect is an excellent program, and we have two very experienced teachers to teach it. Don't be intimidated; this is a class in beginning word processing. Prerequisites for the course are Computer Basics and either MS Works or Beyond Basics or equivalent experience. Return to Class Schedule.

Beginning Internet/Email... We will learn how to set up a free e-mail account using Yahoo and some of the idiosyncrasies about the Yahoo email program including receiving and sending email, attaching files to email, setting up a list of contacts and more. Also, how to use a browser program, choose an Internet Service Provider, use a search engine, understand internet safety, saving favorites, and how to download files. If time allows we will explore some intereting internet sites, how to organize your favorites, setting up you own internet options, and more. Return to Class Schedule.

Introduction to Linux... The Introduction to Linux course will use the Xandros version of Linux which is designed to look and operate similar to Microsoft Windows. The course objective is to compare the two systems and help those who want to evaluate the current status of Linux vs. Windows.

The course will include installing Linux from CDROM and how to use many of the software packages included with Xandros and available via Internet. The major features included will be File Management, Control Center, Open Office and Xandros Networks.

The class sessions will allow hands on use of Linux and students will be given a free CD version of Xandros Linux (Open Circulation).

Greetings & More... The "Greetings and More" class helps students learn to create various projects, such as greeting cards, post cards, business cards, posters etc. using Printmaster 16. With this knowledge students will be learning the basics of desktop publishing. A major part of the class will be "hands on" experience. A knowledge of the basics of computer use is necessary before taking this class. Return to Class Schedule.

Advanced Greetings... This course will review some of the basics of the Greetings and More class (beginning Greetings) and then take up some more advanced aspects of the Printmaster program. This will also be a workshop type class in that participants may want to suggest projects that we can share. A knowledge of the basics of computer use is necessary. Some of the techniques and projects we will cover are:

  1. Layering graphics and text
  2. Matching Color and Font on Ready Made Projects
  3. Fading Colors
  4. Borders and Frames
  5. Adjusting Color in photo Workshop
  6. Grouping and Ungrouping Elements
  7. Creating a collage
  8. Scrapbooking
