JANUARY 13 2009 WINDOWS MOVIE MAKER*

OUR NEW BLOG:  http://computertips2009.blogspot.com/

Hi Gang,

Our meeting after this one will be in March, there will be NO February meeting, try to attend this one if you have any questions, also I will have Professor teaches Vista, and/or Professor teaches Office 2007 for sale at a bargain price, plus some Free Tips CDs.

Our guest speaker Jerry Heaton, SIG leader of Microsoft WORD, will demo 15 minutes of his best TIPS & TRICKS for WORD.

KY at Tennessee will be on ESPN, our class will be from 7 to 8:30.

Game starts at 9 pm. Plenty of time to get home and watch the game.

Our Windows XP/Vista SIG will meet Tuesday at 7 pm.
And what a class it will be!

We will give a demonstration of Microsoft's Movie Maker, it is
really cool, you can put a movie, photos, music, title cards and
then covert it to a DVD. You don't need Picasa 2 or Photo Story 3
for Windows, Movie Maker is so much easier and user friendly.

CLICK ON PHOTO FOR LARGER IMAGE.

Create a photo album on DVD.

Want to show off and share your pictures on the big screen by creating a DVD that you can watch on the TV. Windows DVD Maker makes it simple to do.

Download Movie Maker for Windows XP here: Vista already has Movie Maker.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/moviemaker2.mspx

We will also demo the free photo program IrfanView:

CLICK ON PHOTO FOR LARGER IMAGE.

We will crop, enhance colors, rotate, resize, sharpen, get rid of
RED eye, and more.

Show you how to make a slide show.

Download IrfanView 1.1 MB or get it off the TIPS CD:

Q. After installing IE #7 There is no longer a top "tool bar" where
there is "file---edit---view---insert---"etc with their corresponding drop down windows.

A. Open IE then:
RIGHT CLICK on an empty space on your Tool Bar and click on Menu Bar and the "file---edit---view---insert---"etc should appear and solve your problem.
--------------------------------------

Q. A strange event has me puzzled. I was typing an email as a Blind
Carbon Copy, when the list of names in my addresses list suddenly
flipped. It is now in reverse order, ending with a name that begins
with the letter A. I have tried the obvious (to me), such as Control
Z when it happened and shutting down and starting up anew. Short of
going to System Restore, is there a simpler way?

A. In OUTLOOK EXPRESS, when you open a folder of names, if you
click on NAMES at the very top of the names, it will reverse their
order.
--------------------------------------

Q. Every day I get a ton Junk mail. I delete them and block them but it comes back the next day I bet I get about 20 of those if you could help me on this I would appreciated it.

A. At the bottom of most of the emails, you can unsubscribe, this is what I do, and it works most of the time.

When you are viewing a piece of Junk Mail in OUTLOOK EXPRESS, go to the top and click on Message, then click on Block Sender.
--------------------------------------

Q. I just got home from The program at computer center. Found this ad on Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo XI in my email. They sure make it sound tempting. What do you think?

A. It is a great program but it is way over my head.

Try the free Microsoft Movie Maker and Irfan, these are simple Free

Photo Programs, and do a great job. They are on the TIPS CD or you can download them. After you master them and want more, then buy Paint Shop Pro Photo.

Windows Photo Gallery, Tagging Pictures

If you ask me to show you pictures of just one of my daughters, I have to go through dozens of folders to find them. If I add tags to my daughters pictures, I can bring them up all at once from all the different folders.

Here are some links to help show you how you can tag and organize your pictures in Windows Vista. Tag pictures so they're easier to find:

-------------------------------------------------------------

Q. Joe, do you have both XP and Vista installed on the same computer? Better yet, do you 2 PC's and each program installed on each one?

A. I kept my old XP computer, bought a new one in January with Vista. I do not have both operating systems on one computer.

When someone ask me a XP question, I turn the XP computer on, but I really don't like to use it, Vista is so much faster and user friendly.
-------------------------------------------------------------

Suggestion:
I received an email that was very interesting, I enjoyed it very much, but it had 4 forwards in it.

Recipients would be much happier if you didn't send emails with 4 forwards in it.

It is a little trouble but if you would go through the 4 forwards until you reach the the one with no Fwd: FD: in attach title, then click on the tab Forward. Now you can add or delete anything and your email will open on the first click.
===============================

Q. Is there a way to separate the audio and video in a file. I have a file with lousy video (a ceiling) but great sound (relatives talking). How can I save the audio as a wav file or something similar, so that I can add it as background to some pictures when I make a slide show or movie (in place of music).

A. Import the video into Movie Maker, at the bottom left, be sure you are in the timeline mode, now drag the scenes you want into Audio/Music timeline. Now you will have the sound only. Now you can put photos or a silent video in the video timeline. You will see the videos or photos and hear the audio.

Q. I just spent the last 10 minutes trying to determine the version.

I have Windows Media Player. I do not like the new explore layout of Vista. No where could I find the version. In any program in XP, you used to be able to click on HELP and ABOUT. Why would they change that? Are you able to spot a version on your computer?

Grrrrrr!

A. Open Windows Media Player.
At the top, right click on an empty space on the Tool Bar or at the bottom, right click on an empty space way to the right or left of the Play Button, click on Show Classic Menus. Now click on Help and About Windows Media Player.

From Kim Komando:

I bought several machines for the office in January 2007. All are running Windows Vista. We have had no trouble with Vista. It has been as reliable as XP was on our old machines. So, I would take complaints about Vista with a grain of salt. Some people hate Microsoft, and are overly quick to criticize its products.

Furthermore, new programs are being written for Vista, not XP. Most of those programs will run on XP. But your father could have a problem down the road.

People naturally cling to what they know. But there is no good reason to reject Vista.

From WorldStart:
Q: Can you please explain what the Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool is? It comes through every month with the Windows Updates, but I've never really figured out what it does.

A: The Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool is a utility that scans your computer for any infections that revolve around malicious software. If anything is found, the Removal Tool then helps to get rid of it. A few examples of the software it focuses on a bit more are Blaster, Sasser and Mydoom. Once the scan is finished and the malicious software is removed from your computer, the Tool gives you a report describing everything that was detected and removed.

Now, like the person who asked today's question stated, a version of the Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool is released each month with the Windows Updates. Other versions of the Tool are also released when needed to help out with new security issues. The version you install each month through the Windows Updates simply sits in the background on your computer and alerts you if an infection is found.

Tutorials on You Tube.

YouTube's potential for instruction is one reason Internet search leader Google Inc. (GOOG) bought the video site for $1.76 billion two years ago.

Google founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page realized that certain search requests could be better fulfilled with how-to videos than with written explanations. But they didn't have a good way of filling that need until YouTube landed in their laps. Now Google includes YouTube videos when it delivers search results.

Q. How do I put text into a photo?

A. Putting Text into a photo using Microsoft's Paint Program.

Go to Start, Programs, Accessories, Paint, Edit, Paste From (then browse until you find the photo), on the left side click on the letter A, When you click on the A, 2 icons appear on the left bottom, for the white box, click on the icon next to the bottom, to get rid of the white box, click on the very bottom icon.

Now use your mouse to draw a text box. Then go to VIEW and click on text toolbar and select the font, size, style, bold, etc. To get rid of the border around the text box click outside the border.

January 13, 2009 WINDOWS MOVIE MAKER Review *

Class Photos at bottom of page.

Remember there is no meeting in February.

=======================

No matter which slide show program you use, you should first;

RIGHT CLICK your Desktop, go down to New, and click on Folder, name it Slideshow.

Collect "copies" of the photos you are going to use in this folder.

If your photos need resizing, cropping, or red eye reduction.

Go to Start, Programs, Open IrfanView, on the left side click on the yellow folder, at the top of the window where it says Look In: Browse to Desktop then find and click on the Slideshow folder. Then click on the first Photo.

At the top of the page, click on the Tab, Image, then scroll down and click on Resize/Resample or select  Best fit to Desktop, click on OK. Do Control  S to save,  Be sure to save it in .jpg.

(if you wish to save the original and the edited version

just put add an e to the file name.)

I received Christmas Party photos from my niece that were 1,500 KB, using the above we reduced the photos to 96 KB in .jpg. and you could hardly tell the difference.

CROP: Now click on the first Photo, to crop the photo, put your

cursor in the upper left corner of where you want the photo to

Start, and drag down to the right to where you want it to stop.

At the top of the page, click on EDIT then click on Crop selection. Now Control S to SAVE. (if you wish to save the original and the edited version just put add an e to the file name.)

Red Eye Reduction:

First enlarge photo by clicking on the Red + sign at the top of page several times to make the eyes much larger, now you can work with the eyes better.

Put your cursor on the eye, left click and draw a little square around the eye, Now at the top of the page click on Image, then select Red Eye Reduction. Now work on the other eye.

I suggest you use IrfanView for Resizing and Cropping and Red Eye reductions on your photos. When you move these photos into Picasa2 or Photo Story 3, you can do everything else.

Now let's say you just wish to see a slideshow now of your photos in the Folder and that is all.  Click on the Folder, click on the first photo, hit the F11 key and the slide show will start.

--------------------------------------  --------------------------------------

IRFANVIEW  SLIDESHOW:

Click on FILE, SLIDESHOW, find your folder Slideshow, and click

on it. If you want all the photos, do Control A to highlight them,

then click on Add.

If you want certain photos just click on them and it will add them

to the slideshow.

In the Files of type blank: For Photos scroll and select JPG,

For music MP3.

Now in the Look in box scroll until you find your mp3 file and

add it to the folder, move it up to the top so it will start at the

beginning.

Now click on Play. If you like it and want to save it, on the right hand side click on Save as EXE/SCR file. Save it to you Desktop, RIGHT CLICK on the EXE/SCR file go to Send To: CD-RW Drive, usually D or E.

A bubble will appear on the bottom of your screen, click on it, and a screen will appear with MySlideshow.exe, on the left, click on Write these files to CD.

What is the best way to get rid of Temporary Files. Go to Start, My Computer, RIGHT CLICK on your C drive, click on Properties and on the lower right click on DISK CLEANUP.

Q. I received a docx file, which is Office 2007, I download the reader for it and they ask me to also download the conversion file for Office 2007. It screwed up my desktop icons.

A. System Restore only affects programs and system files, such as those ending in .exe and .dll. Files you have created like .jpeg .doc, .xls and .ppt. are not changed. Any Documents, photos, email etc. are ignored.

When your computer starts screwing up do this immediately, go back a few days when your computer was working OK and restore to that date.

Go to Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Restore and pick a Bold date when your computer was working OK.

Click on Restore my computer to an earlier time, click on Next and the Restore Points will appear on the calendar in BOLD numbers. Click one of the BOLD dates and click on Next.

Response #1:

It seems the solutions you have provided have worked.

I have icons/files back on the physical Desk top and I seem to be rid of that "noxious' problem of "hyperlink' text being inserted when I type or insert and e-mail address.

Many thanks and Happy New Year to you both.

Response #2:

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! Merci beaucoup!

It was perfect. All my distinguishable icons are back, thanks to you.

I seem to remember in one of your classes, you explained how you could change icons to a different picture, but I couldn't remember how to do that.

Thanks again, so much.

One of the best times to buy a computer is inventory clearance time in late January and February.

-------------------------------------------------------------

E-mail photos directly from your My Pictures folder.

Windows XP gives you the option of reducing the file size of the images, making for a better viewing experience for the person on the receiving end of your e-mail. Reducing the file size of your images is particularly helpful when you, your recipient, or both of you are using a slower dial-up Internet connection.

Use Windows XP to shrink and e-mail pictures

1. In your My Pictures folder, open a folder containing the pictures that you want to send.

2. Select one or more photos. If you hold down the Ctrl key, you can click to select additional photos in any order.

3. In the File and Folder Tasks pane, click E-mail this file (or E-mail this folder's files, or E-mail the selected items if you chose more than one image).

4. Next the Send Pictures via E-Mail dialog box appears. By default, the Make all my pictures smaller option is selected.

If you want to be more specific about how much smaller your pictures will be, click Show more options to view your choices. Make your selection from the list. Your original photos are not made smaller.

Click OK to continue.

5. Windows XP switches to your e-mail program, creates a new message window, and attaches your pictures to the e-mail message. Add the recipient's e-mail address, type your message and then send the mail. Using this quick technique to send your photos to family and friends soon

after the event is a sure way to keep everyone up-to-date on your life without filling their e-mail inbox with large image files.

Sneak Peek Inside Windows 7:  PC Magazine

Official Beta version is slated for release in early 2009.

Key features Microsoft plans to make:

1. HomeGroup, simplified home networking for sharing media files and printers.

2. Device Stage, a single page giving access to all the capabilities of a device such as a phone, MP3 player, printer, or camera. It will present a photo of the device and a link to the manual or vendor's software.

3. Windows Touch, for touch screen.

4. Taskbar Buttons are bigger but take up less horizontal space and include printers, scanners, etc. as well as applications.

Hovering over the Taskbar button brings up a thumbnail, hovering over the thumbnail brings up a full screen preview.

You can drag a Taskbar button along the bar and position it where you want it. You can even pin the button app's button, leaving it in the same place all the time.

Click on the Peek button at the bottom righthand corner of the screen and see the desktop.

5. The Sidebar is gone, you can place the gadgets directy on the Desktop.

6. In the System Tray you can determine what events and apps can place icons in the tray and when they can pop up.

7. Dragging a window to the side when there is another window behind it neatly arranges the windows in a side-by-side half-screen mode, and dragging a windows title bar to the top of the screen maximizes the window.

8. Paint has been updated with the Ribbon style menu bar.

9. WordPad has been beefed up with highlighting, line breaks, additional text colors, bullets, indents, print preview enhancements, picture insertions, and zoom.

10. Calculator is also updated. Now you can save a history of your number entries, do unit conversions, create calculation templates, and date calculations.

11. A new accessory is Sticky Notes, a digital equivalent of the adhesive squares that decorate cubicles everywhere.

A. Put the CD or DVD in the DVD drive, it will bring up a window,

choose Open Folder using Windows Explorer, left click the folder and drag it to you Desktop. Now left click on the folder and it will open and you can click on the photos.

Response: It worked like a dream Joe. You are a friend indeed. Thanks.

====================

From World Start:

Q:  I've heard you talk about turning off computers every night for

safety and to save electricity, but what about printers? Do those

need to be turned off as well?

A: The two reasons that go around this are electricity usage and ink

cartridge print heads drying out.

Most ink cartridges have some sort of a capping mechanism that saves

the head from any outside air that may come through when the printer

is turned off. If you leave your printer turned on all day when you're not using it, you're just setting yourself up to have to buy another cartridge much sooner than you normally would

Make sure you always turn your printer off by the On/Off button and not by flipping your power strip device. When you use the On/Off button, the capping mechanism will fully engage and do its job correctly.

right now as it has a bad virus. He stated that the virus could corrupt banking and other secure sites. He went on to suggest using either Chrome or Firefox from Google as a browser for the Internet.

Have you heard anything about this? And what would you suggest?

A. I don't pay any attention to people like this, they have to say something.

As long as you keep your antivirus updated, it should protect you from viruses.

You should also keep your antispyware and windows updated. I use and like Internet Explorer.

If this doesn't work go to Start, Control Panel (classic style) and click on Printers, there should be one printer with a check mark (that should be your default printer) Right Click on that printer, click on Properties, then click on Ports and check to see if the right port is selected.  Sometimes it will go to the LPT1 printer port, with a USB cable and you should scroll down and put a check mark in the USB box.

Response:

It is printing, thank you so much.

Q. Long time since I been to something at CKCS.

I was very interested in your Vista Professor and a reduced rate.

Can you give me more info? Can I pick up a copy? I am planning on

buying Vista within the next couple of weeks. Do you have any

advice. I do not drive at night. Maybe, I can bribe someone to bring

me Tues but would like to get the CD's you have anyway

A. You can stop by CKCS anytime and pick up a copy.

Just tell the person in charge to look in my CKCS mailbox. Just leave me a check for $9.

I hope you mean you are buying a new Vista computer, I don't recommend upgrading an XP computer, it does not have the power to run Vista.

A. Suggest the following:

AMD or Intel Dual Core Processor (@ 2 GHz or more)

160 GB and up Hard Drive

15.4 " wide screen. (For a Desktop get 21" and up.)

Nothing makes me happier than to have a nice attendance.

I want to thank Wayne Bell for the 75 CDs he donated.

Also want to thank Jerry Heaton, Joe Dietz, Gene Wheeler, Dwight Auvenshine, Laura Barnett, Harold Washburn, and other classmates for helping out last night.

Goodbye XP Hello VISTA

Ladies and Gentleman XP has left the building!

(Microsoft had 2500 Certified VISTA Testers and 5 million Beta Testers working months on this new operating system.)

Service Pack 1 (SP1) will be out in March.

Windows Vista Premium is faster, more colorful, more user friendly, and has a lot of new programs built in that will save you time and aggravation.

Microsoft spent 6 years developing Vista and it is was time well spent.

Class Review:

Major Point: Go to Start and at the bottom in Start Search                                             type in what you want to find, like type in   explorer   and at the top you will see Windows Explorer highlighted, hit the Enter Key and wal lah it will bring Windows Explorer up. You can do this with almost any item. I use this all the time, it is one of the best things about Vista.

Use this method instead of going to Start, Programs, etc or to Start, Control Panel etc.

Another Major Point: You can undo most actions by doing Control Z.

1. Welcome center.

This is a new and important addition to Windows and will save a lot of time and frustration. In the first section midways down on the left side, click on show all 14 items. As you put your cursor on each item, an explanation will appear at the top of the window. Suggest  you click on Windows Vista Demos you can view videos on 11 topics, it is good to review these topics.

There is a Run at startup option at the bottom of the page.

(Go to Start, Control Panel (classic view) Welcome Center)

2. Sidebar:  This is brand new, it is a vertical bar on the right side of your computer, on my sidebar I have a Clock,(there are 8 different styles.), Calendar, Weather, Slide Show, and Notes. If you click on the Calendar date, it will bring up the entire calendar month, click on that specific date and it will bring up just that date.

When you are in the Calendar, you can go back or forward for years and years.

Right click anywhere on the Sidebar, then click on Add Gadgets.

At the bottom click on Show Details and as you click on each gadget it will tell you more about it.

(Go to Start, Control Panel (classic view) Windows Sidebar Properties.)

If the Sidebar is not there, type in   Sidebar   in Start Search.

3. Thumbnails: Brand New. When you put your cursor on a program or document in the Taskbar it will show you a thumbnail of item and the full name and extension of the item.

4. Windows Flip,  Alt + Tab shows you all the programs you have open by thumbnails. Hold the Alt key down and hit the Tab Key each time, it will highlight each in turn.

5. Windows Flip 3D Flip: Windows Key + Tab show you all the programs you have open big time in the middle of your screen like a deck of cards. Hold the Windows key down and hit the tab key to go thru them one at a time. (Jerry Heaton likes this one.)

6. MENU:

Left side commonly used programs.

Right side has 3 sections:

Top: opens various folders.

Middle: Computer Devices, search for items, recent items.

Bottom: A. Control Settings for your computer and devices.

               B. Set which programs opens what files.

                C. Help.

All Programs: Has one list of all programs and folders.

When you put your cursor on a program, it tells you what it does.

At the top right of the menu is a photo or clip art, click on it, then click on Change Picture, Browse for more pictures, find the one you like and click on it. Next time you open your menu it will be there.

At the very bottom right is an arrow which lets you Shut Down your computer.

-------------------------------------------------------------

7. Pin the tale on the Donkey. An easy way to put a program you use all the time in the Start Menu, Right Click on it and click on Pin to Start Menu. To take it off, Right Click and click on Unpin from Start Menu.

If you wish to put a program in Quick Launch, Right Click on it and select   Add to Quick Launch.

8. Search Boxes;

The Search box on the Start menu will search your Programs,

Documents, Pictures, Music, Desktop, email messages, and

contacts. It is faster and responds with each letter you type in.

It is also a quick way to open programs, files, folders. Type in Media Player, sidebar, explorer and the program comes up.

Once you made a Search, you can save it, in case you need it again. Click on Save Search in the Tool Bar.

To find all your saved Searches, type in    Search    in the Start,

Search blank, then click on Searches.

9.  Safety and Security features, are included in All versions of Windows Vista.

A. Vista Basic needs only 512 MB memory also less hard drive space. It is a bare bones version.

B. Vista Premium needs at least 2 GB memory, offers more advanced features including high definition digital video, Windows media center, Windows Backup , and most of the fun things.

9. To personalize your Desktop, Right click the Desktop, and click on Personalize. You can adjust Color, Screen Saver, Sounds, Mouse Pointers, Themes, etc.

Please do not use a Screen Saver, it uses electricity, shortens the life of your monitor and makes dust bunnies.

Please go to Start, Control Panel, (on the left side click on Classic View), Now click on Power Options, on the left click on Choose when to turn off the Display. I have mine set for:

Turn off the display 10 minutes,

Put the computer to sleep 15 minutes.

10. Navigation Pane: Every folder window has a Navigation Pane which appears on the left side of the Window. It gives you access to almost every file and folder on your computer.

11. Windows Explorer:

The Command Bar changes each time you go deeper into Windows Explorer. At the top click on Organize, Layout, then click on:

A. Details Pane. It is at the bottom.

B. Preview Pane. It is on the Right side (in a doc file you can read part of it. In a jpg file you can see a thumbnail of the photo.)

C. Navigation Pane. It is on the left side.

On the left side near the bottom you will see Folders and an up arrow, click on this arrow and other folders will be displayed.

As you put your cursor of different folders or files it will give you additional information at the bottom of the window.

Use the Arrows in the upper left corner to navigate back and forth.

12. Windows Media Center:

With the proper peripherals, you can watch an record television, play music, view pictures, play games and etc. It gives you the tools to organize, view and share all the digital media on your computer. With a burner you can burn a CD and DVD and play it on you computer or Television.

-------------------------------------------------------------

13. Windows Photo Gallery:

Clicking on Pictures, then a folder, then the photo itself and you have all kinds of options.

Fix, Print, Email, Burn, make a movie, etc.

Click tab Fix, you may select, Adjust Color, Crop Picture, Fix Red Eye, etc. This is a great feature, you don’t have to open a photo program to make changes it is built right in to Vista.

Click on VIEWS and you will find a slider to enlarge your thumbnails or click on Extra Large Icons. It’s great. When you are fixing Red Eye it is better to increase the size of the photo and then do the Red Eye fix.

Here we are going to add Tags, this is a new option that lets you identify and organize photos. As I was looking at some old photos on my computer, I tagged 11 photos of Sue Ann, my wife’s niece.

At the top left, click on Go to Gallery and on the left side under tags it showed the folder named Sue Ann, I clicked on it and all 11 photos showed up, I highlighted all of them, clicked on email and sent them to her.

-------------------------------------------------------------

From the Gallery you can open all the other folders you have of pictures and work on them.

14. Unnecessary changes in Vista:

A. The RUN option:

You really don’t need it anymore, whatever you typed in RUN you can type in Start Search.

If you must have it:

Right click the Taskbar, choose Properties, Start Menu tab, click customize and check Run Command.

Or type Run in Start Search blank. If you just want msconfig, just type in msconfig in the Search blank.

B.  To Add/Remove Programs.

XP:       Start, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs:

Vista:   Start, Control Panel, On left click on Classic View, then Programs and Features.

C: Outlook Express is now Windows Mail.

The way I sent photos by email, I open Windows Mail, click on Insert, Photo (Find the photo and click on it.) Now it will insert the photo into the body of the email, you do not have to open an attachment to see it.

If there are several photos, I highlight them all by using Control A, or individually by holding the Control Key down and click on each one I want, now that they are highlighted, Right Click and select Send to:  Mail Recipient, it will bring up an option for picture size, click on 640 x 480 then click on Attach, it will send the photos in the body of the email and also as an attachment.

You can also insert you signature, like

Kindest regards,

John Doe

we'll take this up at another time.

----------------------------------

By Default, Vista automatically synchronizes the computer time with an Internet Time server once a week.

Click on the Start Button or hit the Windows logo key, same thing, you get the Start Menu.

Windows Movie Maker:

Windows Photo Gallery: Sucks in all your photos on your computer. If you move your cursor over the photo it will automatically enlarge the thumbnail and tell you name of the file, when you put it in your computer, the rating, and the size. You can also Fix, Print, Email, Burn, make a Movie.

15. Let’s go Snipping:

Start, Programs, Accessories, Snipping Tool.

Or Type   Snip    in the Start Search.

You can capture anything on the screen with different options: Click the down arrow on New:

Free Form Snip

Rectangular Snip  (this is the best one to use)

Window Snip

Full Screen Snip

(this is like print screen only much, much better.)

Now left click and drag the big + down and then to the right to capture the scene, then turn it loose, click on the Floppy Disk icon and save it to your Desktop or Documents.

16. Ease of Access:

Ease of Access Center:

Magnifier:

Narrator: Type Nar in the Start Search and click on Narrator at the top of page.

On-Screen Keyboard: Type  Key the Start Search, at the top click on On-Screen Keyboard

-------------------------------------------------------------

17. Breadcrumbs:

Put your cursor on the arrows in the address bar to navigate between files and folders faster and easier.

-------------------------------------------------------------

18.  VISTA  UTILITIES:

A. Reliability and Performance Monitor:

Click on the Start Button and type in    perform    and, at the top of the page click on Reliability and Performance Monitor  you’ll see Resource Overview of CPU, Disk, Network, and Memory.

Next click on Performance Monitor, then check it out, then click on Reliability Monitor and check out Installs, Uninstalls, failures in Applications, Hardware, Windows and Miscellaneous failures.

-------------------------------------------------------------

B. Generate a Diagnostic Report:

Click on the Start Button and type in    perform    and, at the

Top of the page, click on Performance Information and Tools, on the left under Tasks:

Manage startup programs

Adjust visual effects, indexing options, and power settings

Open Disk cleanup

Advanced tools.

click on Advanced Tools and at the bottom click on, Generate a system health report.

===============================

19. User Account Controls.

This is a little aggravating, but is a great security device.

Vista asks your permission to do a lot of things.

We do not recommend this, but if you insist:

Go to Start, Control Panel,  on the left side click on Classic View, User Accounts, Turn User Control Account on or off.

Vista doesn't like this turned off and will give you a red
X (Windows Security Alerts) in the Notification area
(right side of the Taskbar). A bubble warning you and when you click on the bubble it takes you to where you can turn it back on.

----------------------------------

20. Burning DVDs in Vista (Vista has it own program.)

Put a blank DVD into your DVD ROM drive.

When the AutoPlay message box appears, click on the

option that says "Burn files to disc using Windows."

Then just follow instructions. It will ask you to name it.

then it will format it.

A window will come up and just drag and drop a file or folder into it. Then more files or folders if you wish. Eject it, and later put it back in then copy and paste more files or folders into the DVD.

If you want to use the DVD on other computers, you must Right click on an empty space and select Close Session.

Once you Close Session you cannot add any more files or Folders.

----------------------------------

21. Vista’s Disk- Partitioning utility

Lets you create, delete, resize, and format partitions.

Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management, Storage, Disk Management.

----------------------------------

22. Windows Defender: Microsoft's spyware fighter

Your system is monitored for spyware at all times.

Microsoft Windows Defender includes automatic definition

updates.

Open Windows Defender, click on Tools, Software Explorer, it will show your Startup programs and describe them in detail.

Q. I have a 3+year old Dell with XP. My main concern is that

occasionally it makes a whining noise. I've always heard when your unit starts whining, you're about to be in big trouble.

A. Usually when your computer starts making noise, the fans, or the hard drive may be going bad.

If it is the fans, have them replaced, but if it is the Hard Drive,

please do not spend any money on a computer this old.

Please back up all important data in case it does go bad.

Q. Where to get rid of old computers.

I have an old computer (still works), two monitors, two printers and a scanner all in working order. Is there a recycling place or what?  Thanks

to about 1/12 its original size.

MP3 is to music as .jpg is to Photos.

Q.  I want to keep a couple of my own pictures in the Desktop list but they keep disappearing.

I right click on the Desktop and select Properties. I select

Browse and select the picture I want as my Desktop. The picture is added to the Desktop list. and displays in the tiny monitor. I select Apply and it displays on the Desktop and it is good. I select OK and viola! I've got my picture on the Desktop as I want.

Now, I do the same thing again and I have a different picture on my Desktop. The next time I look at the Desktop list ... my other picture is GONE!

A. That is the way it works, it will hold the one picture until you put another one in.

   =======================   =======================

Q.  I'm wanting to change the default programs that open when I play a DVD or look at pictures. I have XP Home with SP2 and haven't been able to find an answer to what seems like a simple question using Microsoft's Help and Support page. It only refers to SP1.

A. Click on My Computer, Tools, Folder Options, File Types and then scroll until you find the dos file extension, click on it, then click on Change and select which program you want to open the file.

Q.  I am unable to make a print copy of an email and

something from Microsoft Word.

The computer says:

Windows cannot print due to a problem with the current

printer setup. Check the printer by printing a test age from Windows. Make sure the printer is on and on line.

Reinstall the printer driver

A: Go to Start, Control Panel, Printers and other

Hardware, Printers and Faxes and see if your printer is

listed and is the default.

--------------------------------------

Q.  I updated a program in Microsoft XP media called

Music match Jukebox. After upgrading. I have this

result that I did not have before. When I turn the

computer on and the screen is done. My computer now

automatically dials EarthLink and I am on the net. I

don't want this to happen every time I boot up. How do

I correct this automatically dialing up after booting

up. I checked the settings in internet properties.

They seem to be correct.

A. 1. Click on Start, Run, type in msconfig click

OK, at the top right click on the Tab, STARTUP, now

uncheck that program so it does not start up each time

You'll get a dialog box next time you boot up, just put

a check mark in the blank and click OK.

2. Go to Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools,

System Restore and pick a Bold date, when your computer

was working OK. This should take you back before the

update.

If you need the update, reinstall it and see if there

is an option in the configuration that you can uncheck

so it won't start up each time.

Response:  I did as you said. msconfig unchecked the program  (2 Lines). dialog box and put check it OK. I used System Restore to Monday the 29.  Restored and worked

great . Have old program as it was and I do not dial up

on booting. Thanks Joe. You saved me a lot of

worry. I am up on 98 2nd edition and not on XP. I

have had it for 6 months only. thanks again

Q. I'm in 'geek' overload in learning the how to's on my new Vista.

Hoping you can answer a question for me:  In setting up the sidebar, I want the whole month calendar; but, its only displaying the individual day.  How do I get the whole month calendar and not just the individual day?

PS  I understand you'll be going over the Vista on March 13th.  My intentions are to be there and re-join.

A. Click on the Day and it will show the monthly calendar.

Click on that day of the month and it will return to that day.

Word 2008:

Q. What is happening when I highlight a word or paragraph?

A. A vague mini toolbar appears, when you put your cursor on it, it appears brighter, with it you can change the font, size, color, BOLD, etc. (I really like this feature.)

Word 2000 thru 2008:

Q. What is this Control F (find) feature?

A. When you highlight a single word and do Control F the word magically appears in the find box, you do not have to type it in. (another great time saver.)

-------------------------------------------------------------

Windows XP and Vista:

Q. Why have I been advised to use the Power Options instead of the Screen Saver?

A.  The Screen Savers keeps your hard drive working and your screen lit up, wearing these items out and using electricity.

Suggestion: go to Start, Control Panel (classic view), Power Options and set the monitor for 10 minutes and the Hard Drive for 15 minutes.

XP: When leaving your computer for 20 minutes or longer, click on Start, Turn Off Computer, Standby and it will put it to sleep immediately.

Vista: Go to Start, click on the lower right arrow, sleep.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Q. What is Windows Explorer?

A. Windows Explorer is a file manager, it contains all your files and folders and drives.

From here you can Copy, cut, create, delete, find, move, save, shortcut, zip and unzip Files.

The best view of Windows Explorer is Details.

At the top of the page click View, then Details. This is a superior way to look at your files because it will show the NAME, SIZE, TYPE, and DATE MODIFIED.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Q. Will a web Accelerator Surf up to 6x faster than

standard dial-up?

A. A web accelerator is a computer that resides between

your personal computer and the Internet and reduces web

site load times.

Net's acceleration technology "caches" (temporarily saves)

recently or frequently accessed HTML and image files so

they're sent to your computer at a faster transfer rate.

In your case, up to 6x faster than standard dial-up.

saves the head from any outside air that may come through when

the printer is turned off.

Do You Back Up Enough?

A new study by the Consumer Electronics Association finds that about 80% of the survey respondents said they use their home computer as their primary long-term storage option. 77% burn their files onto a CD or DVD and 29% employ redundant storage by copying their files onto more than one device. But overall, the study concludes that Americans are falling down on backing up. Almost one in three consumers doesn't see the need to back up. 22% of the study respondents reported that they don't back up because it's too time consuming.

That's disturbing when you consider that the average American adult has 1,800 digital files.

and Professor teaches Office 2007 CD Tutorials for $9.

These are great tutorials and will show you how to do many things in these wonderful programs. CD Tutorials are the easiest and best way to learn. You can go as slow or fast as you wish and repeat and repeat if necessary.

For better security and peace of mind:

1. Install antivirus and antispyware programs and

regularly update them.

2. Be sure your firewall is enabled.

3.  Do not spend money on software that promises the impossible.

4. Back up your data today, tomorrow may be too late.

5. Uninstall applications that you do not use.

6. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Don’t mess with your computer if it is running well. Leave well enough alone.

=======================

Do not run 2 Antivirus Programs at the same time.

This will often cause trouble. You may use more than one AntiSpyware program.

Want to jazz up your Desktop or Windows Explorer Icons:

Right Click the folder you want to change and choose Properties.

Now choose the Customize Tab, and select the Change Icon button.

Find one you like, select it and choose OK.

Click OK again to finalize the change.

===============   =======================

Clean Your Desktop

Too many icons on your desktop?

Right-click the desktop and select, New, Folder.

Name the new folder Misc.

Now, drag any icons that aren't being used on a regular basis to the folder.

You have a much cleaner desktop, and if you need one of the shortcuts, open the Misc folder and there they are.

(I have seen some Desktops with 42 icons on them, this defeats the purpose of the shortcuts if you have to wade through 42 icons to find the shortcuts. I keep only two columns of shortcuts, when I get more that number, I just drag it into the Misc folder.)

Q.  I was using dial-up for many years. Then, in one of your SIGs you suggested testing the internet speed. I was getting about 18kb to 24kb on a 56kb dialup connection!

Enter the 21st Century. I decided to get Broadband.

Then, here's Joe again ... try PCpitstop to test your internet

connection. I did. It was 618KB! Joe gets 3000KB. I'm paying the same price. I should get that too.

They tweaked my Settings.  Just like smoke and mirrors, my internet was running at 3,442KB. Happy me!

Microsoft Launches Windows 3.1

Microsoft effectively doomed the command-line interface of DOS with its Windows 3.1 GUI (graphics user interface) for IBM-compatible PCs.

For a measly $149, users could enjoy the benefit of sound

cards, CD Audio, Super VGA (800 x 600) monitors, and

9600bps modems.

Windows 3.1 also let users cut and paste between applications.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Q. I purchased a new computer with Windows Vista. I cannot

open my e-mail attachments with the new computer.

A. E-mail programs generally do not open attachments.

You must have the program that is associated with the attachment's file type. For example, .doc files are typically opened by Microsoft Word.

(I have had no problem opening attachments with Vista.)

To check file associations in Vista, click Start, Control

Panel. Click Programs, then click Default Programs. Select

"Associate a file type or protocol with a program."

Office 2007 is big time improvement:

The 2008 Office System is by no means just another collection of incremental tweaks.: This is clearly the most compelling Office upgrade in recent years. You can download the suite from a special page of the Microsoft Office Online site and check it out for yourself--free for 60 days. Most of us only need Office Home and Student 2007, it has WORD, EXCEL, and PowerPoint. It is usually on sale for $129 or less, and you can use it on 3 computers, that makes it only $43 per computer.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Word 2007.

1. If you wish to see your text in different color, size, font, etc. just highlight the text, and rest your mouse pointer over the feature, color, size, font, etc and it will preview the formatting change without actually changing it.

2. The Mini toolbar appears right on top of the text you highlight with a lot of common options you use, font, size, color, etc.

3. The Microsoft Office button at the top left of the screen has many options, one shows the last 17 documents you have opened.

4. You can add any commands to the Quick Access Toolbar at the top of the screen by right clicking on button you want and selecting       Add to Quick Access Toolbar.

5. When you click and hold on the scroll bar, a text box will appear that tells you what page you're scrolling to and the section title that begins the page.

6. Below the scroll bar, you'll find a series of buttons.

The double up and down arrows are for moving one object up or down.

The middle button (the dot) is called the Select Browse

Object button. It allows you to select what items or

objects the double up and down arrows jump to. For

example, if you set the button to Graphic, the up and down

arrows will jump from graphic to graphic, regardless of

how many pages are between each graphic.

To see your choices, click on the Select Browse Object

button. You should see a small palette of choices appear.

Q. Where are the AutoCorrect Options?

A. Click the Office Button, Word Options, Proofing.

Many people equate it with image quality. But megapixels

simply dictate how big you can make a picture and get

IBM bores tiny holes in computer chips

By PETER SVENSSON,

AP Technology Writer Thu May 3, 1:28 PM ET

NEW YORK - Computer chips, it seems, work better if

they're more like Swiss cheese than American cheese.

Chips with minuscule holes in them can run faster or use

less energy, - potentially one of the most significant advances in chip manufacturing in years.

IBM said the technology could be added to existing

manufacturing lines and applied to current chips, boosting

performance by 35 percent or cutting power consumption by

the same percentage. It expects to start using the technique in 2009.

Q. Joe, My hard drive is about to go bad. I have just recently

bought new monitor and keyboard. Is possible just to buy a

hard drive and exchange it for my old one? I see some hard

drives advertised in the paper. My computer is a Dell bought

new Aug 2004. Thanks for any advise.

A. Your computer is almost 4 years old, I wouldn't advise spending any money on it. The new computers are so much more powerful and are very reasonably priced. The Vista Premium operating system is fantastic.

You'll save money and headaches by buying a new one.

Response: Thanks for the advice. Will look at new ones.

----------------------------------

When using Power Options for VISTA Laptops:

Type Power Options in Start Search blank and hit Enter.

Power Saver:  Low speed 50%, low battery usage, alters Vista Interface from Aero Glass to Aero Basic interface.

Balanced:    High Speed when needed, Medium battery usage, lowers brightness of screen.

High performance:  High Speed, High battery usage. Full brightness of  screen. (I use this one)

----------------------------------

Hi Joe,

I "finally" got with it and started using Power Options.  Now my computer can take naps when I'm napping.          Thanks.

I want you to know we had some good questions and

good advice by the class members last night.

We also had a good time.

Please take your time reading these emails and

Thanks to Dale Siewart,  d.siewert@insightbb.com for demonstrating how corrected a giant slow down of his computer.

If you are having a problem like this, please email him.

First he did the 3 finger salute, Control, Alt, Delete, and found his CPU usage was running at 100%. He found out his HP printer software was using all of this, he found .dll file that was the villain.

Uninstall the HP software and reinstall it to solve the problem.

Class Questions:

Q. How many people downloaded Windows SP3 and did you have any trouble with it.

A. 3 classmates downloaded it one had a problem and said WorldStart had an email that solved his problem, it had to do with some AMD processors. WorldStart had a step by step on how to go into the Registry and change a value.

For more information email: g.humphrey2@insightbb.com

For WorldStart emails click on:   http://www.worldstart.com/

On the left side I put a check in the following 3 boxes.

Computer Tips Daily, Computer Tips Weekly, Just For Grins

then enter your email address.  You can cancel anytime. You will learn a lot from their emails.

----------------------------------

Q. My Windows updates are set for 2am each day, my computer is turned off then.

A. Click on Windows Updates, and on the left click on Change Settings, Install updates automatically (recommended). I have

mine set for 10am every day, put a check mark in the bottom 2 boxes, Recommended updates, and Use Microsoft Updates, then click OK. From then on it is automatic for all Microsoft products.

----------------------------------

Q How often should I Defrag?

A. I usually do this every 2 months. To do a bang up job you should first Start, Computer, Right Click on the C drive, click on Properties,

down on the right, click on

1. Disk Cleanup, I put a check mark in each box and click OK, then click on Delete files.

2. Now click on Tools, Check Now, then I put a check mark in Automatically fix file system errors.  Then click on Start.

3. Defragment Now. Now you will see Analyzing disk (this takes a few minutes.) Then it will tell you whether you need to defrag or not.

----------------------------------

Q. What is AMD mean?

A. There are 2 Companies that manufacture processor chips.

AMD: Advanced Micro Devices: http://www.amd.com/us-en/   and

INTEL: http://www.intel.com/products/processor_number/eng/chart/core2duo.htm

Intel might be a little better, but not enough to spit on.

In this weeks Best Buy Sunday insert they have computers with:

1. AMD Turon 64 x 2 Dual Core that has a speed of 2.0Ghz.

2. Intel Core Duo that has a speed of T2050  1.60 GHz to ES8500  3.16 GHz. You can Google the number of the chip and get the speed.

Use to when you bought a computer they told you it was a certain GHz now you have to dig to find out what you are buying.

My Desktop has Intel at 2.40 GHz, My Laptop has Intel at 1.60 GHz.

Both have 2 GB of RAM.

Most people with XP have a one processor chip, with Vista you need 2 Processor chips, which are 40% faster and uses 40% less power. Dual Core is here and Quad Core is on the way.

In addition to your processor chip speed, you should have at least 2 GB or 3 GB of RAM.

----------------------------------

Q. What is XP you keep talking about?

A. Microsoft Windows XP is you operating system, this is the basis of everything you do on a computer. The new operating system is call VISTA and it comes on the new computers you buy.

----------------------------------

Q. I am on Dialup and am having a hard time updating my Zone Alarm.

A. This is only a suggestion. I have used Windows Firewall for years and found it to be fine. I like using Windows stuff so when you use Windows update it takes care of all Microsoft products. I have used their Firewall with XP and VISTA never had a problem.

I also use the free Windows Defender for my Spyware.

If you wish to do this please call me at 299 6464 and I'll talk you thru it.

----------------------------------

You hear a lot about VISTA, my printer, my scanner won't work?

Well, that is true, you have to download new Vista Drivers. I have 2 Lexmark Printers, downloaded the new drivers from Lexmark web site and the printers work fine.

Let me tell you the 3 things I love about VISTA:

1. Start Search, I don't care what I'm looking for, a program, photo, document, email, all I do is start typing the name into Start Search and there it is.

2. Snipping Tool, it is like Print Screen only I can save and print any part of a document, web site, email, and it makes a jpeg file out of it.

3. Windows Photo Gallery, I click on a Photo and the program comes up, at the top I click on Fix and without going to a special program, I can Adjust Color, Adjust Exposure, Crop, Fix Red Eye, etc.

----------------------------------

Q. How do you reduce the size of large photos you get by email?

A. I use the program IrfanView, it is a free program you can download: http://www.irfanview.com/main_download_engl.htm  or it is on the CD I give out.

Open IrfanView, click on the yellow folder on the left, find you photos, click on one of them, then click on the Tab, Image, scroll down to Resize or do Control R on the keyboard, click on:

Best fit to Desktop, click OK and then do Control S to save.

If you have several large photo you wish to send by email and wish to reduce there size all you have to do is Highlight the photos by holding down the Control key and click on them, now just Right Click on one of the photos, select Send To, then Mail Recipient, and it will let you select the size, then address the email and send it.

----------------------------------

Q. How do you get Google's AutoFill to work all the time?

A. It doesn't work all the time, the web site must allow it to work. It works most of the time.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Q. How do I set AVG, my anti-virus Program up for automatic updates.

A. Right click the AVG icon (it is on the right side of the Taskbar), click on Launch AVG control center, Right click Scheduler, then click Scheduled Tasks, then Edit Schedule.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Q. Do you think it is a good idea to use a screen saver?

A. It is a terrible idea, it uses electricity, wears out your monitor and hard drive and the fan pulls dust thru your computer.

Do use Power Options. Go to Start, Control Panel, Power Options and set the monitor for 10 minutes and the Hard Drive 15 minutes.

Still better when leaving your XP computer click on Start, Turn Off Computer, Stand By.

In Vista, click on Start, near the bottom click on the arrow, then sleep. When you move the mouse or hit a key it will wake up.

-------------------------------------------------------------

Q. I have Vista, which tutorials should I buy?

A. I bought Professor teaches Windows Vista and also PC TUTOR Learn Windows Vista and Office Deluxe (it also has tutorials on Office 2003 and Office 2007). I got them at Office Depot when I bought my new Toshiba Laptop. This is my 2nd Toshiba and they are very good, Consumer Reports also thinks so.

-------------------------------------------------------------

DESKTOP:

(When the instructions say click it means left click.)

Caution: please write down the settings before you change

them, so you may return.  I’ve been there and it is very

difficult to remember the old settings.

How do you change the picture on your Desktop:

In XP:

A. Right click your Desktop, click Properties,

Click Desktop, then click on Background:

1.  Click on the down arrow and choose between bubbles, rivets,

  black thatch, clouds, etc.

To put your favorite photo on the Desktop,

click on Browse and find the photo you want, double click it.

In Vista:

Right click on your Desktop, click on Personalize.

Click on Desktop Background, use scroll bar to find photos, Windows Wallpaper, or click on Pictures and then browse.

At the bottom of the screen, you have three choices of how the picture should be positioned.

A. Fit to Screen.

B. Tile.

C. Center.

----------------------------------

In XP:

2. Under the Screen Saver tab:

Click on the down arrow and choose between Blank Screen,

Flying Windows, Scrolling Marquee, Pipes, Flying Objects, etc.

Choose Settings to change the speed and density, etc of the

above.  Click Preview to see it on the full screen.

Scroll down and click My Pictures Screen Saver, click on Settings,
Browse, find and click on the folder with the photos. Now click on
Preview to see it.

(I don't recommend using a Screen Saver it uses electricity and

will wear and tear on your monitor.)

I recommend using the Power Options, Go Start > Settings > Control

Panel, and click on Power Options, maybe set the monitor for

10 minutes and the hard drive for 15 minutes, your choice.

In Vista:

Right click on your Desktop, click on Personalize.

click on Screen Saver, use the down arrow to select.

Say you want Photos, then click on it, then click on Select, then click on Browse, find your folder with the photos and click Save.

Now click on Preview to see.

3. Under the Appearance tab:

(Caution: please write down the settings before you change

them, so you may return.)

IN XP:

At the bottom left of this dialog box click the down arrow

on the Font size and select, Normal, Large, or Extra Large.

The is will change the size of your fonts on the Desktop,

Start Menu, Tool bars, some documents, in general most fonts

will be larger. Try it and experiment with it.

On the lower right side click on Advanced.

You may click on the down Item arrow and choose to change

the font, size, or color of the Inactive Title Bar, Caption

Buttons, Active Title Bar, Scroll Bar, Window, etc.

You may also make the font BOLD or Italic.

One of the first things I always change on a computer is

the Caption Buttons, the – Box and X, at the top right

side of you window. I enlarge them to 25, this

makes it easier for me to put my cursor or arrow on the

right button. I increased the size of the Scrollbar.

I also made my Active Title Bar Red and

my Inactive Title Bar Blue, because I like those colors.

IN VISTA:

Right click on your Desktop, click on Personalize.

Click on Windows Color and Appearance:

click on Open classic appearance properties for more color options. Now click on Advanced, now you can scroll and change all kinds of items. Before you change anything write down the original settings.

I'm telling you, you can not remember them, please write the down.

I usually change the  Active Title Bar and the Inactive Title bar, Scroll Bar, and  Caption Buttons. When you make the Caption Buttons larger it automatically make the Taskbar larger.

---------------------------------

4. Under the Setting tab: IN XP:

(Your video card and monitor will determine your choices.)

On the left you will have colors:

Total numbers of Colors

256 (8bit),                              256 Colors

High Color (16bit),              65,536 Colors

True Color (24bit)               16,777,216 Colors

On the Right, Screen Area 640 by 480 pixels, 800 by 600 pixels,

1024 by 768 pixels. A pixel is three dots (red, green, blue) on color

screens.  The more pixels, the smaller the type.

Under the Themes Tab, after you have made several choices, you may save them by clicking on SAVE AS ( then name it xxxxxx)

IN VISTA:

Right click on your Desktop, click on Personalize.

Now click on Display Settings.

==========================================

the Quick Launch portion of your Taskbar or to your Start Button.

Once you have a shortcut you can change its appearance by Right

Q.  How can I put a web address shortcut on my Desktop?

A. Open Internet Explorer, go to the web site, make the screen small enough so you can see your Desktop, put your cursor on the little e

Q. Joe, I forwarded these pictures to a few friends.

One of them let me know that she did not get the pictures.

Just a frame with a small x.

This is not the first time.

What am I, or what is my computer doing wrong?

Your thoughts on this would be very much appreciated.

Thanks

A. This is really hard to understand.

If the person normally receives pictures, and sometimes don't,

then the photo may come from one source and the text from

another.

This happens most of the time when the email is forwarded.

The photo is embedded in his email but not embedded in the Email

My favorites things about VISTA are, Snipping Tool, Start Search, Windows Movie Maker, Windows Photo Gallery, Windows Defender.

When I have to go back to my XP machine I don't like it.

----------------------------------

Backup your files in VISTA:

Type Backup in the Start Search blank and hit Enter.

Click on Change Settings, at the bottom click on Change backup settings, click Next, I put a check mark in Pictures,

Music, Video, Email, and Documents, click on Next and configure.

Q. Joe, Is there anyway to retrieve the names of the "undisclosed recipients" ? I wanted to check to whom I had sent a message!    Thanks,

A. Click on the Sent Items, click on the "undisclosed recipients"

Email, On your keyboard do Alt Enter, then click on Details.

A while back someone ask why when you put one of your own photos in Background it stayed there, but if you put another of your own photos the first one disappeared.

Barry Breeze has found a way to prevent that.

Hi Joe, Not long ago I read where someone was wanting to use

their own photo for a desktop wallpaper and wondered why they

couldn't keep more than one image in the list that appears when

you call up Properties for the desktop. You may already be aware

of this but if not I have discovered a way to keep as many of

your own images in that menu as you wish. What I did was to let

the computer search for one of the default images in the menu,

when I had located this folder I simply dragged a copy of the

jpg image file into that folder and Presto.... it then appears

in the menu with all the default (factory installed a better

term?) images.

In my computer (running XP Pro) the path to that folder is:

C:\WINDOWS\Web\Wallpaper   It may be possible for it to be found

in a different location in different versions of Windows...

 I don't know for sure.

Hope this helps. Let me know... : ) Best Regards, Barry Breeze

Using Barry's XP information:

In Vista you type Wallpaper in the Start Search box. now drag any photos into this folder.

Q. How do I convert a music file to MP3?

A. Open Windows Media Player, click the down arrow of the Tab RIP,

then click Format, MP3.  Now put your music cd in and RIP them.

If your music is already in a file on your computer, then google:

Free audio file converter.
